[回憶]
--Chairil Anwar,

1943.04

[Kenangan]

untuk Karinah Moordjono

Kadang
Diantara djeridji itu itu sadja
Mereksmi memberi warna
Benda usang dilupa
Ah! Tertjebar rasanja diri
Membubung tinggi atas kini
Sedjenak
Sadja. Halus rapuh ini djalinan kenang
Hantijur hilang belum dipegang
Terhentak
Kembali diitu-itu sadja
Hidup kan banjakan djatuh ketanah?
Menjelubung njesak penjesalan pernah menjia-njia

[Memories]
--translated by Burton Raffel

for Karinah Moordjono

Sometimes
On these same old bars
Something withered and forgotten
Bursts in full color
Ah! The shock
Of it floating up
For just
A moment. This wisp of recollection
Dissolves before it can be caught
Snapping back
To that unchanging sameness.
The soul asks: Of the fruits of life
Don't most drop to the earth?
Regret smothers frustration.

[Memories]
--translated by Boen Sri Oemarjati

for Karinah Moordjono

Sometimes
Between these very same trellises
Putting on splendour, giving colour (,)
(There are) Worn-out things (that are) forgotten
Ah! My hopes are crushed
(After) Soaring up high above the present
A moment
Only. The fineness (and) fragility of this thread of memories
(Is) Destroyed (and) lost before (it is) grasped (.)
Deflated
Back to the commonplace things of daily life
(My) Soul asks: Of the fruits
Of life don't most fall to the ground?
Regret (at having) once neglected (her) envelops (and) smothers (me).

.Boen Sri Oemarjati, Chairil Anwar: The Poet and His Language, Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde. 63, The Hague, Martinus Nijhoff, 1972, p.52.
