——Kristine Domingo

Juan Luna: Parisian Life
——Kristine Domingo

Her hat bears the lighter notes in three gentlemen
talking odds. She is cloud-gloved,
buttoned up to every kind of cold. Even
ghosts that absence conjures up.
Two of the men live for ills. Two would die,
she gathers, to find a motherland’s cure.
The one who will take lives for love is silenced.
By her finer argument—lesser is deeper. Then her lips
worth a parenthesis cleared. Her eyes
the water in a bowl after half a portrait.

The gaze she has met. It has filled her
enough, it’s making her a leaner.
What she would give for a brick wall, poison
in either cup. Or to be more in a field
of crosses and crops. In a language of the men
in the middle of a vision. But even she understands
a song has endings. Her island has
borders. Today it’s a free seat facing
a rainy month. A coat lined with No Entry checks.
A chair left by its table for a bigger party.
