If Ai-Mai-Malai were Broken
--Zakariya Amataya, translated by Preeyaporn Charoenbutra & Sunida Supantamart
If the Ai-Mai-Malai vowel were impaired
How could I tell people
Where that highway leads?
Would I be able to tell people
Where I am from?
When I arrived,
And what I desired?
Why would Ai-Mai-Malai be broken?
Suppose there were no Mai-Malai,
Would I still be able to write a poem?
My poem,
Would it still be a poem?
If I wrote a poem concerning a river,
Would the water still flow in the eyes of the reader?
For a poem concerned with a snake in the jungle,
What word could portray
The fire in the eye that blazes?
The cactus on the horizon so far away
How would I be able to see it?
When a poem gets lost in the desert,
I would have to repair the Ai-Mai-Malai
Otherwise
My parched poem would be unable to cough*
But …it should be alright,
For my heart will always be my heart,
Or not?
* ‘Cough’ in Thai (‘Ai) is spelled with‘ ไ ’ or the Ai-Mai-Malai vowel (Translator).
