[流鶯與妻]
--Chairil Anwar,

[Kupu Malam Dan Biniku]
Sambil berselisih lalu
Mengebu debu
Kupertjepat langkah tak noleh kebelakang
Ngeri ini luka-terbuka sekali lagi terpandang
Barah ternganga
Melajang ingatan kebiniku
Lautan jang belum terduga
Biar lebih kami tudjuh tahun bersatu
Barangkali tak setahuku
Ia menipu.
[A Whore and My Wife]
--translated by Burton Raffel
As we brushed by each other
Dust got into my eyes
I walked faster. I didn’t look back
It was horrible to see that open wound again.
A gaping pus-hole
My mind drifted back to my wife
Still a bottomless ocean
Though we’ve been together seven years
Maybe without my knowing it
She’s thrown some dust in my eyes too?

[A Whore and My Wife]
--translated by Boen Sri Oemarjati
While crossing each other
The dust billowed.
I quickened (my) pace. (I) Didn't look backwards
Horrified that this open wound should be visible once more
(A) Gaping boil
(My) Thought drifted away to my wife
As yet an unfathomable ocean
Although we’ve been together more than seven years
Maybe without my knowledge
She was deceived (me).
