聽過海龜在撒哈拉沙漠的故事嗎？
牠以為沙漠是片海灘
(據說平均而言
海龜的壽命可達
三百年)
假設牠用盡所有年歲
最後爬到了海邊
這隻海龜還算是幸運的
但沙漠太巨大
太浩瀚
怎麼爬都還是看不到海岸
最後在祂閉眼死去前
海龜終於說：
「這片海灘多麼寬闊啊…！
這片海灘多麼寬闊啊…！」

Sudahkah dengar ceritera Kura-kura di gurun Sahara?
Gurun pasir dikiranya pantai lautan
(Menurut kata, pada umumnya,
Kura-kura mencapai usia
Tiga ratus tahun.)
Andaikata seluruh umur
la pakai untuk mencapai tepi lautan,
Masih beruntung si kura-kura . . .
Namun, gurun terlalu besar,
Terlalu lebar—
Tepi lautan tak tampak juga
Akhirnya kura-kura berkata,
Ketika terakhir menutup mata:
“Alangkah luasnya pantai ini!
Alangkah luasnya pantai ini!”

Turtle in the Desert

Have you heard the tale of the turtle in the Sahara?
Who thought the desert a shore—
They say on the average
a turtle reaches an age
of three hundred years…
Supposing it took all the years of the turtle’s life
To reach the ocean’s edge
That turtle would still be fortunate…
But, the desert is too lage
Too wide
While the ocean’s edge remains unseen.
Upon closing his eyes for the last time
The turtle finally says:
“How incredibly vast this shore…!
How incredibly vast this shore…!”
