--Sitor Situmorang (1924- ),

La Ronde
--Sitor Situmorang

I

Senandung lupa pertemuan malam
Dengan dirinya, memisah di kamar
Meninggi musim hingga salju
Jatuh, hingga bertambah lapar

Dua kisah tak bertubuh
Rasuk-merasuk bau kehadirannya
"Sekira mati begini," bisik gelap
Di puncak nikmat, hingga ke subuh

Terbaring di dada malam. "Milikku seluruh,"
erang detik mengalir dalam ciuman,
kegemasan bibir meraba waktu
memadat jadi tubuh perempuan.

Meninggi musim hingga ke subuh
Jendela dibuka melihat salju jatuh

II

Adakah yang lebih indah
dari bibir padat merekah?
Adakah yang lebih manis
Dari gelap dibayang alis?

Di keningnya pelukis ragu:
Mencium atau menyelimuti bahu?
Tapi rambutnya menuntun tangan
Hingga pinggulnya, penuh saran

Lalu paha, pualam pahatan
Mendukung lengkung perut.
Berkisar di pusar, lalu surut
Agak ke bawah, ke pusat segala.

Hitam pekat, siap menerima.
Dugaan indah.
Ah, dada yang lembut menekan hati
Terimalah kematangan mimpi lelaki!

III

Kau dewiku, penghibur malam hampa
Segala perbuatan siang yang sia-sia
Kebosanan abadi jadilah lupa
Dan badan hancur nikmat terasa!

Di matamu api ingin tak puas
Membakar tulang, hingga ke sumsum diperas.
Kuserahkan pada binatang malam hari,
Nafsumu, semakin buas dan menjadi.

Adakah candi pedupaan lebih mulia
Dari kesucian pualam tubuhmu?
Adakah lebih pemurah dari pangkuanmu
Dan panas rahmat dirangkul mulut dosa?

Padamu seluruh setia dan sembah
Sajak penyair dan mimpi indah!
Kelupaan sesaat, terlalu nikmat
Pada siksa ingin semakin melumat.

La Ronde
--Sitor Situmorang, translated John H. McGlynn

I

Humming to forget the night’s encounter
with himself, he’s alone in the room.
The season climbs until the snow
falls, until the hunger starts to grow

Two tales, disembodied—
The smells of their presence intertwine:
“Oh, to die like this,” comes a dark whisper
From the peak of pleasure, until dawn

Lying on night’s breast. “You’re all mine,”
gasping moments flow into kisses,
frenzied lips search for time
solidify in the woman’s body

The season climbs until dawn
Outside the open window, falling snow.

II

Is there anything more beautiful
than full lips in bloom?
Is there anything more sweet
Than the shadows of eyebrows?

Her brow causes the painter to hesitate:
To kiss or to cover her shoulder?
But her hair guides his hand
To her buttocks, ripe with suggestion.

And to her thigh of sculpted marble
supporting the sloping waist.
Encircling the navel, and then descending
Somewhere, farther below, to the center of all

Black as coal and ready to receive
A beautiful surmise.
Your supple breasts weigh on my heart,
Please accept this man’s ripened dream!

III

You are my goddess, comfort of barren nights
and days of fruitless deeds
Eternal malaise is forgotten
and the body is destroyed by pure bliss!

In your eyes the flame of desire remains unquenched
searing the bones, sapping the quick.
I yield to the animal of the night,
your ever more fierce and unfettered passion.

Is there a temple more holy
Than the marbled grail of your body?
Is there anything more beneficent than your womb
and the heat of mercy lapped by the mouth of sin?

To you I give all the love and supplication
of the poet’s song and precious dreams
Momentary suspension is much too sweet
when tortured longing crushes all hopes.
