--Chairil Anwar,

kawan, mari kita putuskan kini disini:
Adjal jang menarik kita, djuga mentjekik diri sendiri!

Djadi
Isi gelas sepenuhnja lantas kosongkan,
Tembus djeladjah dunia ini dan balikkan,
Peluk kutjup perempuan, tinggalkan kalau meraju,
Pilih kuda jang paling liar, patju ladju,
Djangan tambatkan pada siang dan malam
Dan
Hantjurkan lagi apa jang kau perbuat,
Hilang sonder pusaka, sonder kerabat,
Tidak minta ampun atas segala dosa,
Tidak memberi pamit pada siapa sadja!

Djadi
mari kita putuskan sekali lagi:
Adjal jang menarik kita, ‘kan merasa angkasa sepi,
Selali lagi kawan, sebaris lagi
Tikamkan pedangmu hingga kehulu
Pada siapa jang mengairi kemurnian madu!!!

[To a Friend]
--translated by Burton Raffel

Before Death draws closer, and betrayal,
Leaping at us from behind when we’re looking the other way,
While blood still beats in our hearts and we still have feeling,

And despair has not bloomed and there is no fear,
Remember how quickly the evening can fade, without warning,
A red sail fluttering down in the darkness,
And, friend, let’s part now, here:
This Death which pulls at us also strangles itself!

So
If there's a full glass, empty it,
Pierce, explore the world, turn it upside down,
Love women, but leave the flatters and the sad ones,
Rope the wildest horse, spur him swiftly,
Tie him to neither noon nor night
And
Smash whatever you're made,
End without inheritance, without family,
Without requesting forgiveness for all your sins,
Without a farewell to anyone!

So
Again
Let us part:
This Death which pulls at us will find the sky lonely—deserted.
Once more, friend, one line more:
Shove your sword to the hilt
Into those who’ve diluted the pureness of honey!!!
