[一九八四的觀點]

破壞。礦渣,被堆得像沙丘
沿著鐵道一路延伸到海邊
那邊的煤炭,被沖上沙灘,
英俊又幹練,被檢選出來
為漫長的冬天帶來一點點溫暖。

熔化。隆隆運轉的礦藏,運到日本
去製造汽車。熔化。骯髒模糊的時候
你分不清是誰在動:它們或我們。

此刻我思索著煤炭,但我所能看到的並不是
故事的始末而只是窺伺著某些珍貴的事情
從縫隙間進入地底,一條銀黑色的小徑
在消失之際閃爍了一下。這才是重點。

Spoil. Slag, packed like sand dunes
all the way down the line to the coast
where coal, washed up on the beach,
handsome and useful, is scavenged
for a little warmth in a long winter.

Meltdown. Rolling stock, gone to Japan
for cars. Meltdown. The blur when
you can’t tell who is moving: them or us.

I think of it now and what I see is not
the whole story but the seam of something
precious gone underground, a darkly silver trail
glistening as it vanishes. That’s the point.
